The small-town feel and multiple natural attractions of Chiang Mai make it an excellent destination for a family vacation. Wandering around the Old Town section of the city and visiting Chiang Mai’s Lanna Museum may be fascinating for parents, but the younger members of the family will have a better impression of the city if your trip also includes visits to some educational but fun attractions for kids in Chiang Mai.
We’ll outline some of the natural and child-friendly things to do and experience in Chiang Mai and tell you their locations and details. All of the attractions listed can be traveled to and visited within a single day.
The Chiang Mai Zoo, located at the base of the Doi Suthep mountains, is home to over 40 species of animals spread over 200 acres. Cars are allowed, and a shuttle bus is also provided to ferry visitors around. The zoo is themed into different areas, including the African Zone, which has animals from the African Veldt, and the Nakornping Bird Park, which has over 1,500 species of birds. The Chiang Mai Aquarium is also located at the zoo and has underwater tunnels through the large tanks holding the colorful sea life. The zoo is also home to two giant pandas, who are on loan from China.
The Chiang Mai Night Safari is located approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Chiang Mai's Old Town. It's divided into three zones around a central lake, including Savanna Safari, Predator Prowl, and the Jaguar Trail. The Jaguar Trail is a walking trail that's also open during the day. The two other zones are explored in open-sided safari trams that provide sightings of giraffes, rhinos, porcupines, zebras, elephants, lions, hyenas, and other predator and prey animals.
The park also has a kid's zone, as well as attractions like a musical fountain and Tiger World, where you can watch big cats hunt as they do in the wild.
The park is located about 18 kilometers southwest of central Chiang Mai and consists of an abandoned rock quarry filled with water from the monsoon rains.
The park is monitored by trained lifeguards. The main attraction is a huge, floating, inflatable obstacle course, which you and your kids are free to explore. The park also includes a 10-meter giant slide, a water trampoline, and a special kid’s zone with smaller slides and shallow pools. There’s also a zipline and cable-system wakeboard course. You can also rent a kayak and explore the quarry at your leisure.
Elephant Nature Park is a bit different from the other Elephant sanctuaries in Thailand. Located about 60 kilometers north of Chiang Mai, this park also helps dogs, cats, buffalo, and other abandoned animals in need. You can choose how much interaction you want to have with the animals. You can merely observe them and take pictures, or you can feed and bathe them. This is the perfect place to gently introduce young children to the animal world.
The Siam Insect Zoo is located about 25 kilometers northwest of central Chiang Mai in the Ma Rim District. It's both an insect museum and breeding farm and has a wide variety of insects, both dead and alive. The Discover Zone exhibits exotic insects from all over the world in glass cases. There are also live tarantulas and other harmless insect species that you can interact with.
The attraction also includes a butterfly garden, where you and your kids can learn about butterfly life cycles.
This attraction is located close to the Mae Kampong Waterfall and occupies an entire day to travel to and visit. It consists of the largest series of ziplines in Asia, and it's open to children who are at least one meter tall. After a full safety briefing and being outfitted with safety gear, you'll enjoy two to three hours of ziplining through the forest. Be sure to keep an eye out to catch a glimpse of white-handed gibbons who live in the forest.
Tweechol Botanic Garden surrounds Horizon Village & Resort and is a colorful and enchanting place for adults and children. It covers an area of 114 acres and displays a remarkable collection of exotic tropical plants and flowers. It's also the perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon cycling along the garden's paths.
