Discover Traditional Thai Desserts

Restaurant

A favorite activity for every visitor is sampling all the exotic and delicious foods available practically everywhere you look in Thailand. From fine dining restaurants to street corner food stalls, Thailand provides an array of colorful, exotic and delicious cuisines. Every area of the country has special dishes that must be sampled. A visit to Chiang Mai will introduce you to Northern Thai food, which has combined the influences of Lao and Chinese food.

Northern Thai food is so well-loved that Bangkok and other cities in Thailand, as well as the rest of the world, have restaurants devoted to Northern Thai cuisine. Also not to be missed are the wonderful desserts of Thailand, which are found all over the country. After a great meal sampling of some of the delicious local food in Chiang Mai, indulge in some of Thailand’s traditional Thai desserts. We’ll supply a list of what to look for, their ingredients and how they're prepared.

All of these desserts can be found in the street food stalls of the city, as well as many restaurants. We’ll also offer some tips about places to find specific desserts. Thailand’s desserts are the perfect treats to enjoy as you explore the night markets and sights of Chiang Mai after dark.

Fried Bananas

Kluai Khaek are simply slices of banana that have been dredged in rice flour and then fried in oil. That's it! The sweet banana mixes with the savory taste of the rice flour to deliver the perfect balance of flavors. You'll find them at street food stalls all over the city.

Bananas in Coconut Milk

This is essentially a sweet and salty banana soup. Kluai buat chi has only a few ingredients, but these ingredients create an extraordinary new flavor when combined. Bananas and coconut milk are the primary ingredients, along with added salt and sugar. You can always find this dish at Mae Hia Market and Siri Wattana Market.

Sesame Balls

Sesame balls are a traditional Thai dessert

These deep-fried, sesame seed-covered balls of dough with a sweet bean paste filling are a favorite dessert or snack all over Thailand. But be careful! These rich little balls of goodness are addicting! You’ll find them at Mae Hia Market.

Kanom Buang

At most markets in Thailand, you’ll smell the sweet aroma of kanom buang cooking before you find the source. These light and crispy batter shells are adorned with a dab of marshmallow crème and topped with shreds of sweet egg yolk. You’ll want to eat these hot and fresh off the griddle. They can be found at Mae Hia Market and Siri Wattana Market.

Thong Muan

These crisp cylinders have the same texture as waffle ice cream cones. The taste is a delicious combination of coconut milk and sesame seeds. Be careful when eating them. They'll shatter when you bite into them, and you should eat them over something to catch the crumbs. The Warorot Market is known for the quality of their Thong Muan.

Kanom Krok

More visitors to Thailand have sampled kanom krok than just about any other Thai dessert. The famous little coconut pancakes are loved by people all over the country and sold everywhere. They combine rice flour, coconut milk, shredded dried coconut, palm sugar and salt with a green onion topping. You can buy a 20-baht bag of them at any street stall you see using the telltale, large, dimpled pan. You'll find them at every street market in Chiang Mai.

Pa Thong Ko

Pa thong ko are suspiciously similar in taste and style to "Chinese donuts" or yu char kway. You'll find a stall preparing these light, fluffy and addicting snacks in the mornings and evenings in markets all over the city. They are commonly eaten with a bowl of khao tom or jok.

Roti

Roti is the sweet Thai take on Tamil Malaysian Roti, which is usually served with a curry-type sauce. Thai Roti, on the other hand, is generally a sweet dish served with condensed milk and sugar. It can be found at all the popular fresh markets in Chiang Mai.
